Other Conservation Organizations

Preserving and protecting Nantucket is truly a team effort. Working alongside the Land Bank are several other organizations which purchase land, protect it and help to raise public awareness about our fragile island habitat.


Nantucket Conservation Foundation

A membership-supported, nonprofit conservation organization, with a mission to permanently protect important and beautiful areas of the island for the enjoyment and education of residents, visitors, and future generations.

Massachusetts Audubon Society
Separate from the National Audubon Society, this state-wide, member-supported group is one of the nation's oldest and most respected conservation organizations. On Nantucket, it owns sanctuaries on Hummock Pond, Eastern Moors and Sesachacha Pond, and conducts various research projects.

Nantucket Land Council, Inc.
A nonprofit, membership-supported environmental interest group largely involved in securing conservation restrictions on privately held property. It also sponsors research on water quality, rare species, and long-range planning.

The Madaket Land Trust, Inc.
The Madaket Land Trust was founded in 1985 to maintain the Madaket area’s green belt. The developers of Tristram’s Landing donated a portion of the complex to be protected as open space. The group now holds 65 acres in conservation. It allows walking and some hunting on its properties and its beaches are open to the public.

The Nature Conservancy
The Conservancy has designated Nantucket as one of forty "Last Great Places," and is involved in establishing and maintaining a Geographic Information System database of the island's natural resources for use by conservation organizations and government agencies.

The ‘Sconset Trust, Inc.
The Trust is a nonprofit, Massachusetts-chartered corporation that seeks to acquire and manage parcels of land in and around the village of Siasconset for conservation purposes.

Town of Nantucket Conservation Commission
The Commission is a town agency concerned with enforcement of state and local wetlands regulations. It is also involved in the acquisition of wetlands and beach areas for the public benefit.

The Trustees of Reservations
Established in 1891 by the state legislature, on Nantucket, the Trustees are supported through the efforts of the Friends of Coskata-Coatue Wildlife Refuge. The Trustees own properties at Great Point, Coskata, and Coatue. They also conduct research regarding endangered shorebirds.

Maria Mitchell Association
Named after the island’s best known astronomer, this nonprofit organization maintains a natural science museum, aquarium, and two observatories. In addition, the MMA sponsors research and educational programs, nature walks, children's activities and lectures.
